It ain't easy being a villain...

It's hard being a villain... and even harder when the local contacts think you're out to get them. As she suffers the consequences of killing the fixer who double-crossed her, Capricious Whim realizes she needs someone to watch her back. She needs the perfect partner one who doesn't want to be top dog, and who probably won't betray her.

Enter Regulus, a villain from the "bad old days". The psychic operative has got the experience, subterfuge, and brutality she needs to succeed in her goals. In him, Caprice meets her equal in power, blood lust, and desire. A meeting between their minds results in a dark, dangerous passion, a thirst unable to be quenched with just one drink.

There's only two problems... he's an interdimensional fugitive from Axis Earth, an alternate dimension where the Axis powers won World War II, and his help comes with a price. When Caprice agrees to help him get free from the hunters who pursue him, a seemingly straightforward task becomes complicated... fast.

This is a super-villainous dark fantasy/sci-fi novel, containing mature content and themes including descriptive violence and explicit sexual situations.

Even though she'd probably kill me, I kinda love Caprice, AKA Capricious Whim, the protagonist (anti-antagonist?) of Ms. Melos' "Villainess" series. Caprice is perfect (she'd better be, she paid for it) and perfectly sociopathic. Perfectly deadly. Perfect doesn't mean flawless, and what's a villainess without her flaws? Overall this was an amazingly hot and action-filled read and I'd even go as far as to say it's one of the best books I've read all year, erotica or otherwise.

Prince of Cups starts after the first book in the series, Queen of Swords, leaves off. In Queen of Swords, Caprice was hired to do a job that seemed simple but wasn't. The fallout from her decisions on that job continue to haunt her in Prince of Cups. Prince of Cups is dark and hot and loaded with juicy world-building details. The characters are what you wish comic book villains could have been but never were: complex, sexy as hell, and truly sick in the head.

The titular character, the Prince of Cups, is named Regulus. After a scorchingly hot meeting with a demon to find his whereabouts (an extremely dark and sensuous scene that I loved), Caprice locates him to secure his help. However his help comes with a very interesting and heavy price. Regulus is, dimensionally-speaking, not from around here. He is from an alternate Earth, one in which the Nazis won World War II, called Axis Earth. Not even villains like Nazis, so they fight and trick their way into a facility which contains a portal to Axis Earth. Once there, the shocks and delightful details of the story just keep coming and don't let up until the unrelenting end.

But none of this even scratches the surface of what I love about this book. There is a mix of magic and technology, here. A strange melding of science and the occult. These are not normal people. Not just because they're sick, twisted villains, but because they are metahumans. In other words, they have super powers, and this is what really drives the story. Caprice is not just sociopathic, she's also telepathic, so she thrills and seeks pleasure in reading the thoughts, memories, and emotions of the people she kills--or has sex with.

Regulus is also a telepath. Now, you tell me: how hot do you think it would be for two people who can read each other's minds to sleep with each other?

Exactly.

There's still more to it, though, because Caprice has a dangerously sexual relationship with a metahuman in Earth Prime (the normal world) and this metahuman can allow his body to be inhabited by the spirit and powers of a vampire. This vampire's villain name is Nosferatu, after the classic old-time cinematic vampire. The attraction between Caprice and Nos is as deadly as it is powerful. How this comes to matter in Prince of Cups I will not spoil for you, but if you like your sex dark, dirty, and bloody, you are in for a sick treat.

I can't recommend this series enough. If you haven't read the first one, Queen of Swords, get that one and this one, too, and read some smart, thrilling erotica that will make you think as well as arouse you.

The Prince of Cups Villainess Book 2 eBook Alana Melos Rev Jotham Talbot Reviews

The Prince of Cups is the second volume in the Villainess series by Alana and it absolutely brings the same storytelling excellence found in the first book. Where to start...

First off is the Prologue. What makes this fascinating is that it goes more in-depth into Caprice's world and how it came about. The author gives just enough information to get the "flavor" of the history but leaves you wanting to know more about the Event. You also get a mention about Caprice's parents. Some readers may find this a bit frustrating but I prefer the "dropping bread crumbs" way of telling the backstory. It whets the appetite for more.

Prince (proper) begins with a kick ass fight showing that in this world there are always consequences to your actions. It's these consequences and the fallout from the earlier job that sets the entire book's events into motion. Caprice finds herself needing a partner and recalls a name from the past- Regulus. She sets out to find him and the story pretty much is go from there. I am trying very hard not to spoil anything about the plot but I will say this. When Caprice and Regulus finally meet, it is hands down one of the best sex scenes I have ever read. And it's not just the sex, it's the whole interaction between Regulus and Caprice. You can tell the author enjoyed putting these two together. In fact, ALL of the sex scenes in Prince are some of the best I have ever read.

Prince of Cups brings back a couple of favorites from the first volume. Alistair makes a brief appearance. Most importantly, in my opinion, Nosferatu is back in all his dangerous glory, in more ways then one. There are a number of new characters introduced. Regulus being the main one. Another very interesting newcomer is Malech. He appears briefly and just that bit makes a reader want to see much more of him. The last major new character is the Nacht Sirene. She is definitely worth watching.

Alternate timeline stories are not new but this one has a few twists and turns that move it a couple of notches above the ordinary. Again, no spoilers, but there was one twist that had me laughing out loud. The action is intense and pretty much non-stop. And very, very dark in places. I would even say that, if Queen of Swords was dark, Prince is downright pitch black in some instances. Don't expect fluffy bunnies and kittens from this book. Caprice's world is harsh and stunningly violent. The psychology of the characters is twisted but perfect. Caprice's world will kill you but will have you loving every minute of it.

If you haven't read Queen of Swords, do so. If you are thinking about buying Prince of Cups, do so. You will not be disappointed in the story, the characters, and the sex. I am so much looking forward for the next volume in this series.
How long did it take me to buy Prince of Cups (Villainess Book 2) after reading The Queen of Swords? Ha! Wrong! I downloaded Book 2 and book 3 before I was halfway through Book 1. Yeah, Alana Melos is really that good. In Villainess Book 2, Capricious Whim (the ultimate anti-hero) just gets better and better as her character begins an unpredictable arc across the complex world of erotic strangeness only Mrs. Melos can create. New characters paint her latest dreamscape with complexity and unpredictability. Even better than book one, The Prince of Cups is a continuous blood crazed splash of non-stop lust and adventure. All those things which make reading Alana's work so much fun. If power hungry, smart, sexy, brutal women main characters caught in fantastic worlds of clashing meta humans, mythical creatures, multiple dimensions and pounding sex light your fire, your mind will burst into flames beneath Alana's pen. If those things aren't your cup of tea, well, then s***... I'd have to say something is definitely wrong with you.
